A recent AutoPacific survey designed to better understand consumer demand for a built-in dash camera uncovered that possible insurance liability protection is the top reason consumers want this feature. 85% of respondents who indicated that they want a built-in dash camera in their next vehicle said “It could provide insurance liability protection” when asked why they want one. Consumers also want the ability to record dangerous driving by others (70%) and to record important interactions outside of their vehicle (65%). The survey of 930 current vehicle owners was fielded by AutoPacific August 18-25, 2020.

“With the constant growth of video in many aspects of our lives, it’s not surprising that many vehicle owners are open to the idea of using video to protect themselves and their vehicles, “ says Daniel Hall, Vice President of AutoPacific.

While the majority of consumers surveyed indicated that they would like a dash camera in their next vehicle, those that are not interested, cite lack of necessity (70%) and concerns over personal privacy (48%) as the top reasons for lack of interest.

Experience with Home Security Gives Rise to Interest in Vehicle Security

When asked if they would use a dash camera as a surveillance system, 93% of respondents said they would also use the camera for surveillance when the vehicle is parked, though there are concerns about their vehicle’s battery life if the camera is used when the vehicle is not running.

“Our research shows that respondents who want a built-in dash camera in their next new vehicle are more likely to currently have a home security system, Ring or VPN than those who do not want one, so it seems natural to want to carryover that experience and peace of mind to their vehicle,” says AutoPacific market research analyst Deborah Grieb. Additionally, 70% of respondents say they would use a dash camera that recorded all the time for the purpose of potentially lowering their vehicle insurance rate.
